Surrey Championship round up (From Sutton Guardian)
Premier Division
Tom Deighton took 5-17 off seven overs on Saturday as Ashtead put Wimbledon to the sword by 80 runs in the Surrey Championship.
With the willow, Ashtead’s Michael Sanderson (54) and Conor Young (54*) hit half-centuries en route to 213-8, before Deighton’s heroics had Wimbledon all out for 133.
Ashtead, in sixth, go to title-chasing Reigate Priory this weekend, while Wimbledon host Weybridge.
Beddington had already been relegated before Saturday’s three-wicket defeat at home to Weybridge.
After carding 151 all out, Beddington could not hold back the Weybridge tide, and the visitors were home and hosed inside 37 overs.
This weekend, Beddington host table-toppers Sunbury.
Sutton are still clinging on to their top flight status after a 44-run defeat at home to Guildford.
The visitors clocked up 222-6 having elected to bat, meaning Mike Nicol’s unbeaten 83 in reply was in vain as Sutton fell for 178 all out.
Sutton are five points above the relegation places with two games to play, starting with the visit of Normandy this weekend.
Division One
Banstead could not stop Surrey Championship Division One leaders Valley End taking another step closer to the title on Saturday.
Despite carding a respectable 208-7, Banstead were then put to the sword by Valley End opener Luc Durandt, who hit 117 off 118 balls to guide the champions elect home.
Banstead, in fourth, host Leatherhead this weekend in the penultimate game of the season.
Any slim hope Leatherhead had of an immediate return to the Premier Division is gone, despite a 26-run win at Malden Wanderers.
Jack Baker (105) and Joe Peak (77) helped Leatherhead to 266-7, a target Malden fell short of in the 46th over.
Leatherhead needed second-placed Cranleigh to slip up at Old Rutlishians to have any hopes of catching them, something Cranleigh decided not to do.
An immediate return to Division Two of the Surrey Championship for Old Rutlishians had already been confirmed well before last weekend’s eight-wicket defeat to title-chasing Cranleigh.
After carding just 115, Old Ruts’ bowling attack could not keep Cranleigh at bay and the visitors were victorious inside 21 overs.
Old Ruts’ penultimate Division One game sees table toppers Valley End visit Home Ground.
Talha Mumtaz was the century-making hero for Old Whitgiftians on Saturday as they won by eight wickets at Spencer.
Harshil Patel took 4-23 as the hosts – for who Archie McPherson (57) starred - were skittled for 200, before Mumtaz (102) and Chris Thompson (69) saw the Old Boys, who host Cranleigh this weekend, home.
Division Two
Bank of England remain just two points outside the relegation places in Division Two after they toppled long-time champions Camberley by seven wickets.
The visitors carded 250-6, but BoE were unfazed and Charlie O’Brien (54), James Woodroof (83) and Damon Ridgway (62*) hit the runs that gave BoE, who are at Egham this weekend, an unlikely win.
Godfrey Stevens hit 111 for Epsom on Saturday, but it was not enough to prevent defeat at Dulwich, or to stop Epsom dropping out of the promotion places.
With the bat, Epsom could not let loose, and were held at 211-4 off 50 overs – a target Dulwich passed in the 43rd over.
Epsom are now eight points outside the top two with two games remaining, stating this weekend at home to Chessington.
It has been a torrid season for the already relegated Purley, who will be playing Division Three cricket next season.
They went down by 135 runs at Farnham on Saturday, and go to champions Camberley this weekend.
A seven-wicket defeat at Esher on Saturday means Worcester Park need a minor miracle if they are to win promotion.
Rob Waite hit 77 in a Park total of 203, but Esher ticked off the runs inside 32 overs.
Park are 26 points off the top two with 40 available – they go to Farnham, in second, this weekend.
